Joel Plaskett live at the “Charles Bronson Centre For the Arts” – Ottawa

Posted on: May 21, 2009

I knew I was in for a fun night when Joel Plaskett came out and greeted the crowd at the self proclaimed “Charles Bronson Centre for the Arts” and proceeded to sarcastically apologize to Mr. or Ms. Bronson should he have offended them. As a first timer to a Joel Plaskett concert I was extremely impressed by the engaging character of the man himself and equally by the diversity of his talents. There was really a show inside the show too with the ongoing comic banter. Once my friend and I got past this particular venue for this particular show we had a great time. Seasoned Joel Plaskett fans could be heard complaining that there was no place to dance in the theatre style seating but in the true sense of the word fan later rushed the stage and got the party started.

three2_bigThrough two sets, the singer songwriter and budding comedian shared his apparent love for music with the appreciative audience. The first set seemed an adjustment for the artists and fans alike with a more acoustic sound than is the norm. Personally I found this to be a great way for me to get to know some of his songs a little more intimately. Joel’s father Bill Plaskett has been touring with the band and seemed to be reveling in this opportunity to jam with his son.

Moving into the second set saw his band The Emergency join the performance and the mood of the old high school auditorium began to shift into high energy fun.  I can honestly say that Joel Plaskett’s albums, while very entertaining do not do his vocal talent justice. He has an incredible range and delivered a crisp and clear delivery for the entirety of the show. This is a guy you just have to see live to be able to appreciate what he can bring to the table musically and otherwise. I highly recommend that you check out one of his shows if you can.

I ‘m excited to boot to continue to get to know Joel Plaskett’s work and am kicking myself in the ass for not paying enough attention until now. Much thanks to good friends for making the awesome night of good music and good company reality.

I’ll leave you with one of my favorite songs of the night, Natural Disaster. Enjoy – it’s a Life of Tunes keeper!
