I know, I know your thinking where the hell has he been. Perhaps that is my overdeveloped ego talking and it is more likely that you didn’t even notice I was missing. Who know that it would be such an adjustment since the last day of school. My daughter finished school last week and what was supposed to be a more relaxed schedule has been blown up in favor of running around like a chicken with my head cut off. So it’s been a week since I posted. It hasn’t helped that I have been so distracted by the Dany Heatley saga of the Ottawa Senators. Mr. Heatley has requested a trade out of Ottawa and been holding the team hostage ever since with his “no trade” clause. The Ottawa Senators are a passion of mine almost as great as music – almost but not quite.  Dany Heatley The Bum. Needless to say my place in the universe has felt askew this past week.

I thought it fitting to make today’s post a love song or rather a song about love lost. Dag nabit  I loved you Dany Heatley and now “The Pieces Don’t Fit Anymore.” James Morrison sings the perfect song about how the relationship between the Ottawa Senators and its fans has fared. So much effort on our side and it’s just never enough to make Dany Heatley happy. Please know that there is a single tear slowly felling down my cheek as I write this post today.

I’m just a little bitter – really.

In reality hearing this song today made me laugh for a couple of reasons. First there is the most obvious in the lyrics and tone of the song. Don’t get me wrong, I actually really like this song but the kind of whiny vocals seemed appropriate.  The other thing that actually made me laugh out loud is that the front cover of Undiscovered, the album that has this track on it has a close up pensive or even melancholy photo of James Morrison’s on it. It actually kind of looks like a sulking Dany Heatley to me. Am I right? Maybe it’s me.

I have included a live version of the track and posted the original studio version of the song for your listening pleasure as well.

Check out this funny advertisement for Dany Heatley as well!

Enjoy today’s Life of Tunes keeper, The Pieces Don’t Fit Anymore while you burn your #15 Heatley jersey, and pass me the Kleenex.

Today was a busy day! I commented to a family member this evening that I am not sure I even listened to any music at all today but music has still been on my mind. Tonight I have been thinking about how lucky I am to have great friends in my life and it got me to thinking about great “friends” songs. One of my favorites ever is Joe Cocker’s version of A Little Help From My Friends. So hey you friends out there, this goes out to you!

  1. Last night I watched a movie that shall remain nameless for the time being so that I don’t spoil it for anyone. In this movie there was a plane crash. I had a song pop into my head for like a millisecond and then “poof” – gone. It was driving me crazy but I could not think of the name or tune of it no matter how hard I tried.
  2. The movie ended with a scene that reminded me of another movie I saw in the 90’s called Fire In The Sky. This is a pretty good movie which had the desired effect as I recall. My friend and I who saw it were both feeling quite “anxious” as I recall on the drive home.
  3. This reminded me of my family’s 1987 GMC Safari that I was driving that night and how much I loved cranking tunes in that van when I was a teen. I clearly remember blasting 13 Engines, a fun Canadian 90’s band in that van. There is no reason for me thinking of this in particular, it was just a flash.
  4. This first vehicle of my youth reminded me of when I bought my own first car, a 1983 Volvo GLT. Man I loved that car. This morphed into a memory of my friend and I driving at night with the moon roof open in the mountains and singing Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd at the top of our lungs.
  5. Pink Floyd made me think of when I travelled to Toronto in the late 90’s to see them live with a few friends and what an amazing show that was.
  6. Pondering this trip made me recall a good friend of mine at the time and how I haven’t talked to him in many years now. He had a Renault Alliance, burnt orange or reddish or something if I remember correctly. For some reason this car made me think of Credence Clearwater Revival. I am not even sure if he liked CCR but this was my memory nonetheless.
  7. CCR made me think of another movie that I really enjoyed (for the soundtrack and the scenery) called Indian Summer. This made me start to sing “Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah” by Allan Sherman for some reason. I am pretty sure that this track was in the movie but I am not absolutely certain.
  8. “Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah” made me think of camping when I was a kid.
  9. Camping made me think of the brand of trailer that we had when I was growing up. It was a Travelaire I am pretty sure.
  10. Memories of camping with my family in my childhood made me think of all the great trips we did growing up. This was the first thing that I thought of when I woke up this morning and the train of memories continued from there.
  11. A specific memory of my Dad backing down a narrow mountain road while towing our trailer then popped into my head along with the recollection that this took place somewhere on the east coast.
  12. East coast travel made me think of travel there with my own family in recent years.
  13. This brought about a recollection of a trip where the Lenny Kravitz 5 CD was played over and over again. Great CD!
  14. Traveling, music, east coast, family, driving, singing at the top of your lungs, overplaying great CD’s and a realization that music really is the most prominent part of my memory reminds me of a specific holiday I took with my girls. The soundtrack of this journey included Mr. A-Z by Jason Mraz at great length.
  15. Thinking of this CD made my favorite song from it pop immediately into my head. The title of this song is “Plane”. Great song.
  16. Plane by Jason Mraz is also the song I was trying to remember the name of while I was watching that movie last night. I have been stewing on that for over 8 hours and finally I have my answer. Man my brain is messed up! The good news is that 8 hours later I am no longer obsessed and using 80% brain capacity to try and remember the name of the friggin song that was on my mind during that plane crash scene.

onceIt’s all about the two minute mark. That’s just when Glen Hansard & Markéta Irglová really get the pipes going. I know what you’re thinking, well some of you anyway, you’re thinking who the hell are Glen Hansard & Markéta Irglová? They are the singer/songwriter/actors from the movie “Once”When Your Minds Made Up is one of many great tracks from the official soundtrack and movie. If you haven’t seen “Once” I highly recommend this film and its soundtrack. It’s a great movie in its own right but an even better move for the music lover. At the two minute mark of When Your Minds Made Up the vocals really get ramped up with great energy, energy intense enough that when I try to sing along in the car I fear for my windows. The video quality is not great but you will get the idea and since you are going to buy the CD anyway, you just need a sample 😉

On my way home tonight I had this loud enough to rattle the glass of my car on its own, but then throw into the mix my Pavarotti like harmonizing and I am sure the windows were rattling in the 4 lanes around me. For your listening pleasure I have decided that we will stick with the original version and not our highway remix. There is a funny little song called Broken Hearted Hoover Fixer Sucker Guy that Glen Hansard sings on the bus in the film and I have added a hilarious little animated video as well that has the song in the background. Funny! It’s actually my favorite track on the CD.

Watch both videos below!

What a bloody day. Not literally but my day could not have been worse. I woke up and got kicked in the balls twice within the hour. No not literally. I’ll type slower so you can keep up.  Anyway it was not a happy Monday morning and I was feeling like crap about it for the better part of the day. I am dealing with a few issues that are just getting old if you know what I mean; feeling like I am just going round and round in circles. I am sure there is a song in those words but not the song that really gave me what I needed in dealing with the insanity that was my day.

till theThis was serious business and serious for me often has me thinking of Ray Lamontagne. “Empty” of off Till The Sun Turns Black was spot on for how I was feeling today.  As if on cue Ray sings “And of these cut-throat busted sunsets, these cold and damp white mornings, I have grown weary” , putting beautifully into words just exactly I was feeling to be dealing with BS again.

The course of the song seems to take on the course of my day or perhaps the opposite is true. By mid day I am feeling more grounded and ready for battle when I recall some lines at the end of this fitting song, Empty. “Well I looked my demons in the eyes laid bare my chest, said “Do your best, destroy me. You see, I’ve been to hell and back so many times I must admit you kind of bore me.

Now sitting and reflecting on my day reading the lyrics from start to finish they have a totally different meaning for me. The song I am listening to now is about love and loss, the same song. Odd, isn’t how a great song can do that.

Below is a live version of Ray singing Empty from BBC Four Session.  Listen to the studio version of this awesome track here:

I was sitting here feeling like hearing something new today when I remembered it’s Wednesday. Duh, new stuff comes out on Tuesday! Then in the middle of this thought, it hit me….Dave Matthews Band! Dave Matthews new CD was out yesterday. This feeling could mostly certainly make my own list of 1000 Awesome Things. 1000 Awesome Things is a fantastic blog about life’s daily treasures. It has become part of my reading regimen is quite fun to check out daily. There is nothing better than when you realize that one of your favorite artists has a new CD out and you totally forgot about it. You don’t have to count the days to release date or listen to snippets here and there on various websites. It’s the real deal here and now. Truly awesome!

big whiskySince Life of Tunes has not reached MTV or VH1 proportions I did not have the pleasure of an advanced copy of this new Dave Matthews Band release. I can now however pick up my own copy and that is exactly what I did I love what I am hearing so far. I am not sure if Dave Matthews is even capable of putting out anything less than great in the music department and Big Whisky and The GrooGrux King is no exception. This album is most certainly going to be a Life of Tunes keeper but I will resist the urge to label it so until I have had a few more days to absorb what I am hearing. Spaceman, Baby Blue and You and Me are all tracks that stuck out immediately for me in addition to the first single off of Big Whisky and The GrooGrux King, Funny The Way It Is.

Below is a live video performance of The Dave Matthews Band doing Funny The Way It Is and if you would like to hear the studio version which I recommend, you can listen to that below as well.

Pick up this future Life of Tunes keeper today enjoy!

simple timesToday has the beginnings of a crappy day plain and simple. There’s too much going on, not enough time to get it all done and no way to see through all the twists and turns of the day coming out the other side unscathed. Like everyone, I get this way once and a while. Sometimes it takes some luck or a friend to change the direction of my day. Some days I am sure the universe intervenes and sends me down a different path. Today it was a more tangible action on my part that gave me the shot in the arm I needed. I actually went looking for my happy music playlist. Yes I have a happy music playlist. You can stop laughing now. No – I’m not embarrassed. Let’s get back on track here, 4 clicks of the mouse changed the whole direction of my day. One click on iTunes, one click on “Happy Music”, one more on shuffle and last on play. Song number one pops on and it’s Brand New Day by Joshua Radin.

It’s a simple song and depending on the mood I am in a sappy song. Today it’s exactly what I needed. As I listen, my friend Josh reminds me that today is not yesterday and I don’t need to take yesterday’s crap into today with me. “For the first time in such a long long time I know I’ll be ok” is exactly what I needed to hear.

Joshua Radin is a great songwriter and a talented singer to boot. If you haven’t experienced his music I highly recommend that you check him out right away. There is something very calming about hearing this man sing.
